My Experience with iWeb

by: Aisha Nee

At first you are taken by the simplicity and elegance of this wonderful little program. Its ease of use is a feature of Macs - something that would definitely appeal to all Mac fans. It is pretty much WYSIWG environment enriched with marvellous templates and wonderful colours. You can play along with your photos, videos, announce your facebook friends that you have suddenly decided to go live with your website - all to release your creativity and hidden passions!

At some point you feel that it is too good to be true! Indeed, if something SEEMS to good to be true - it probably is. As you proceed to discover all the ins and outs of the iWeb program disappointment begins to mount.

First, you can't get access to your html code. And this is an important omission which even a complete newbe would lament. We all need to check some basic codes now and then for minor and major reasons, and the inability to get it really sucks.

Second, and following from the first, iWeb does not allow you to control at which place of the code your html snippets are placed. It becomes crucial when you can't verify your site with google. Because google demands that you place a meta tag in a specific place of your html file.

And iWeb just dumps html in random positions without giving you the opportunity to choose where exactly you would like to see your piece of code inserted.

Third, the pages loaded with iWeb are very slow - and this has probably got much to do with cumbersome code produced by iWeb. Having moved away from the iWeb idea and begun to use Dreamweaver instead, I realised how much quicker my pages become.

Finally, you are really limited with how far you can go with your iWeb site. If you subsequently looking to expand your pages and add complexity to your content, do not start messing about with iWeb. It is easy, but it will triple your work when you eventually realise that it has not enough capabilities to meet your growing needs. The best solution is to invest more time and energy to a more complex program that would be able to reflect your site's growing demands.

To conclude: I would use iWeb for a personal home page. Just to share my baby photos with the world and to let them know that I went on a marvelous holiday last year! It is also facebook-worthy. I bet all your friends would envy your brand new personal site enriched with photos and home videos. But iWeb does not offer anything more than that. If you are looking to create a serious website, choose something more appropriate for your needs.
